The red pill or the blue pill?

Yes, that is a ‘The Matrix’ reference.

You can choose to allow the festive period to seriously derail your progress, or you can make some simple adjustments to your plans to limit the damage. The holiday period is here now, and it can be tempting to hit pause on exercise. However, staying active doesn’t have to feel like a chore, and will allow you to hit the ground running in 2025...

Or you could bury your head in the sand and tell yourself that the New Year is the time to start again!!

Accepting that work parties will set you back a little bit, doesn’t have to

The red pill or the blue pill

mean that you avoid them.

I was out with some clients earlier in the month and I think that they’ll confirm that I wasn’t counting calories – far from it actually!! I love a good burger!

But once the three-day hangover had passed (yes, I’m old now…) I was back to training and eating sensibly – purely because it makes me feel so much better.

You don’t have to write off Christmas and New Year just because you have a few social events in the calendar. You might not fancy exercising right now, but you know how sluggish you will feel after a day or two of eating, drinking and doing nothing...

You can take your foot off the gas enough to enjoy this time of year but don’t just freewheel into the New Year. It will only mean you have bigger challenges to deal with when you get there!

Here’s my simple five-point plan to stay on track whilst balancing the festive fun:

  1. Festive Walks: After meals, go for a walk – go with friends and family and get some fresh air!

  2. Mindful Choices: Don’t deny yourself your favourite Christmas treats but focus on moderation and balance.

  3. Morning Stretch Routine: Start each day with a short stretch session to keep your body limber. Focus on key areas that may tighten up from sitting, travelling, or indulging in rich foods.

  4. Bodyweight Circuit: Keep things simple with a full-body bodyweight circuit that you can do anywhere, whether you’re at home or visiting family.

  5. Dance Party: Take advantage of the festive music by turning up the tunes and dancing around your living room. Dancing is not only fun but also an excellent cardiovascular workout that can improve coordination and flexibility.

Remember, consistency—not perfection—will take you into the New Year stronger than ever.

Have a great one!
